It is a well-known fact that Multinational Companies prefer to recruit engineering graduates who are proficient in the English language. The availability of students in the VBIT campus and considering the need to use their evening hours resourcefully and to give them a chance to hone their skills, a forum under the umbrella of SWAYAM was created to enhance the employability skills of hostelers. English language and soft skills training sessions are conducted during the evening hours, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Students were divided into five batches. In order to give individual attention, each batch was limited to 20 students. Expert faculty are recruited to train the residential students in English language and soft skills.  These facilitators guide the students to fine-tune their oral and written communication skills.

In the academic year 2018-2019, SWAYAM commenced its activities from the mid-August, wherein the initial training module for the first, second and third year B.Tech residential students provided exposure to functional English grammar. The foundational training in English grammar enabled them to practice the communication skills needed to compose and present their written communication with coherence and clarity.  During the second phase of training, students were given exposure to oral communication skills. Residential students participated in literary competitions such as Debate, Spelling Bee, PowerPoint Presentation, Just a Minute (JAM), Describing Visuals, Treasure Hunt, and Group Discussion. It was followed by prize distribution ceremony. On 10/05/2019, the management, principal, vice-principal, staff and participants attended the prize distribution ceremony and made it a memorable event.  SWAYAM continues to extend expert guidance to the residential students and is expected to introduce many more creative activities for the academic year 2019-2020.
